A civilized man... that is to say, one raised to be confident in his masculinity - has a nearly visceral hatred of rapists. It's not only a violation of the social contract, but a negation of what a man is supposed to be. Men protect the weak, which includes women. Rail against this all you like, but the physical differences between the sexes mean that men, in general, are stronger than women.

Of course, that's speaking statistically. Certainly there are weak men... who aren't men in the classic sense. For example, any man who denounces "toxic masculinity" has not learned what being a man means.

I cannot imagine saying it any better than you just did. Sometimes it is very hard to remember when arguing with my husband that he and I have different interpretations of the same situation, and that is because men and women don't think alike. When I stop and remind him of this he says, "ah... men are from mars." BTW neither of us has ever read that book, but we know about it.
