My favorite Trek and Avery Brooks was perfect in his part. As were several others.

It has become increasingly hard for me to choose between James T. Kirk and The Starbase Commander Formerly Known As Hawk as to which is my favorite Star Trek captain, but I agree that DS9 was the best series, more consistent and better plotted overall than the original series.

Yeah, he was a great Hawk. Much better than the Spenser guy.

I tend to think that DS9 was so good because "going where no man has gone before" tends to limit the 'strangeness' factor to one planet at a time, and whatever interspecies interaction there is has to occur within the crew and that tends to lead to less character growth.

DS9 was in a single (albeit very large) space with multiple species interacting in any episode, plus the repeating interactions between various species who were NOT crew (and therefore did not owe much allegiance to one another). This gave the writers a much broader canvas. I miss DS9 more than any of the others, and pretty much skipped out after it ended.

Also, DS9’s entertainment value has held up very well. More than the older Treks.

Even my wife liked it and she's not really a Trek fan. She is a Spenser for Hire fan (the books) and fell in lover with Brooks in both roles. The DS9 stories are better. I think than the Spenser TV. And the Spenser books kind of tailed off at the end I thought.

Pop philosophy comes in many forms, and of all the entertainment offerings, Star Trek might be the most saturated with it. Good catch, great exegesis.
