I think that may be why DS9 was peak Trek (fight me!)
By placing the show at a nexus where many other civilizations passed through, and near a hotly contested planet, they were able to explore stories the haughty Federation would never dirty their hands with. Even the Ferengi (previously just a capitalist punching bag), Cardassians (big bad until the Dominion showed up) and the religious Bajorians were all treated as three dimensional.
Walter Koenig went on to play Alfred Bester, PsyCorp Cop in Babylon 5 a few decades later. Bester was almost as good of a villain in the series as Q was in Next Generations. And Koenig played it like he was enjoying himself. Cheers -
Star Trek has always been political. I'm so old, I can remember when it was liberal without being leftist. The original series episode, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield with two half black half white guys clearly sends a liberal message that I agree with. See also The Omega Glory and Bread and Circuses.
But Roddenberry himself was pretty far leftist/prog. I worked in the Aerospace industry with his brother, who was NOT leftist and so his remembrances to me of Gene may be biased but it was not a family trait, apparently.
Attempting to punish anyone descended from Russians is part of the unthinking mob mentality that seems to have taken over every organization in the West. It's insane, and it's only a matter of time before the mob comes after you (any reader of this comment).
I reacted to Troi just the opposite. In the first year, she was a military officer who used her empath powers. She later morphed into just another therapist. And her marriage to Wolf was ludicrous.
There are two white male heterosexual main characters in Picard. Elnor is not "white", not the character nor the actor. I think it would have been too complicated story-wise to have an Absolute Candor Romulan running around 2024 LA.
Also, I think Elnor is Star Trek dead, meaning not really dead.

And Gul Dukat was best character. 💙
Due to developments in Star Trek: Picard, Dukat's new rank is Skull Dukat. Kira would approve.
I agree about DS9 being best Trek, but it still falls short of B5.
Agree!
And apparently since Amazon now owns MGM, there will be a B5 reboot!

Bester was FAR better a villain than Q was - Q was just a self-absorbed jackass.

One was half-black. The other was half-white.
Got to keep the facts straight.

I missed that little note from Sirtis when it first came out. Too bad. Her character grew on me and I thought she was better than that.
With Sirtis' Troi being an empath, apparently, Sirtis is a good actress.

You may be confusing her with Jadzia Dax.
No, she hooked up with Warf on TNG. Riker in TNG and Picard, and one of the movies.
IIRC, the marriage of Worf and Troi was an alternate reality.
Watching Picard Season 2 and the woman are just overwhelming. And of course they killed off one of the men.

I was correct about Elnor.
